Youth in Philanthropy awardee on the up and up…

on .

Inyathelo asked Refiloe Seseane, who was the recipient of the 2010 Award for Youth in Philanthropy for her work in founding and directing 18twenty8, to share her ten reasons why the Inyathelo Philanthropy Awards created ripples of change in her personal and professional life.

Refiloe’s cause is about empowering young women between the ages of 18 and 28, from disadvantaged backgrounds, by developing strategies for their educational and personal development.

Reason 1

Because I can never quit 18twenty8.
I am grateful for the considerable faith, support and guidance that Inyathelo has provided to me. It has made it easier for me to continue with my philanthropic endeavours and social entrepreneurship. I have given up everything else for 18twenty8 because Inyathelo gives me reasons to carry on... far more than the 10 reasons on this list.

Reason 2

Because I have networked extensively.
As a delegate at the 2010 Our World Our Responsibility Conference I met other NGOs and grant-makers, both local and international. There was an exchange of ideas and learning as well as collaborative efforts to address challenges in the Philanthropic arena.

Reason 3

Because it has boosted 18twenty8’s credibility, relevance, publicity and scope.

Reason 4

Because it has boosted my educational attainment.
In addition to the 2010 Philanthropy Award certificate, I proudly display my certificate for the Advancement and Fundraising modules that were held in 2011. It is always good to have some impressive certificates on the wall when running an education-orientated NGO!

Reason 5

Because my friend Tshego Leeuw nominated me.
So I have nominated other young philanthropists for the 2012 Inyathelo Philanthropy Awards and I encourage others to do the same.

Reason 6

Because I know that Inyathelo will open doors of opportunity for them too! All the young non-profit organisations that I have referred to Inyathelo have received more than what they asked for.

Reason 7

Because I met Ambassador and Mrs Gips from the US Embassy in 2010.

Reason 8

Because I was selected by the US Embassy to be a member of the 2011 Young African Women Leader’s Forum with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Reason 9

Because through First Lady Michelle Obama, 18twenty8 received a grant to pilot an environmental project called Green Girls.

Reason 10

Because I was selected to receive a Harvard South Africa Fellowship to study at Harvard Business School!

I thank Inyathelo for fostering the philanthropic spirit and hope they continue to spread the advancement magic for more decades to come! ~ Refiloe Seseane
