Joining the dots

Awards LogoGabrielle Ritchie (Inyathelo Programme Director) and Melanie Judge (Inyathelo Associate) are headed to Siena, Italy for the 10th International Conference of the International Society for Third Sector Research.

Gabrielle and Melanie are presenting a paper titled Joining the dots: philanthropy, social justice and a sustainable civil society in South Africa.

South Africa, as elsewhere, holds a complexity of social movements, of formal and informal organisational structures, and a range of approaches to social justice activism. For the purposes of this paper, we focus specifically on the experiences and challenges facing registered non-profit organisations that have, as their mission, a human rights and social justice agenda. This paper contributes to and builds on international debate and discussions concerned with building the third sector particularly in nascent democracies in the Global South. These issues are also directly relevant to the global agenda to build the third sector in developing contexts, to grow resourcing for social justice activism, and to ensure the consolidation of democratic participation.

The full paper will be available on the ISTR site at www.istr.org and is due to be published in a forthcoming Inyathelo publication on non-profit Advancement.
