  • “We teach these children out of a love for our sport and to promote self-love and respect for others. We never expected to get this kind of recognition.” Capetonians Anna Versfeld from Walmer Estate and Marcio Lopez from Observatory received the 2009 Inyathelo Award for Youth in Philanthropy.

  • “Although many South Africans are giving to charitable causes, I don’t think that we’re giving enough!” says Ben. “Everyone can give, no matter how small or how big the donation, or how rich or poor you are. There are many emerging elites and new billionaires in South Africa and I’m yet to see their contributions to society, save for a few.”  Ben and Shirley Rabinowitz received the 2009 Inyathelo Award for Lifetime Philanthropy.

  • “I’ve been praying for something that will help raise awareness of the needs of the children in this community. There is so much more that we want to do, but without more funding, our hands are tied.” She was nominated for establishing Siyanqoba, an organisation dedicated to aiding and protecting those affected by HIV/ Aids and providing clothing and nourishment for abused and neglected children. Nosipho Mayana received the 2009 Inyathelo Award for Women in Philanthropy.

  • "We are passionate about helping those in need, but mostly we’re inspired by children. There is so much need in South Africa and we want to make a tangible and sustainable difference.” Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo received the 2009 Inyathelo Philanthropy Merit Award. The couple were acknowledged for their extensive contribution to helping individuals and communities, particularly for their work with children in Gauteng.

  • Many visually impaired children do not have access to specialised health care in South Africa, especially in disadvantaged areas. Nor do children with autism. It is with this in mind that Professor Lorna Jacklin helped to establish the Children’s Disability Centre in 1983. Professor Jacklin was awarded the 2009 Inyathelo Award for Philanthropy in Health.
